What is a cash and valuables in transit job?
Cash and valuables in transit jobs – or operatives, as they are frequently called – involve the transportation of cargo, (normally currency), from the supplier to the recipient. For example, a CVIT worker may collect a large amount of money from a bank, and deliver it safely and professionally to a counting facility. The responsibility of a worker is to ensure that security is maintained at all times and that the cargo reaches its intended destination as the supplier requested.
Who needs a cash and valuables in transit licence?
Anyone involved in a CVIT operative – be it directly or indirectly – must have some form of CVIT licence. The licence itself is an indication that the holder will carry out their job in a secure and responsible way, and is necessary for operatives which involve safeguarding cargo against fraudulent behaviour, destruction or damage.
For those physically and directly involved in the transportation of cargo – i.e. collection and delivery – a front-line licence is required. This is a small identity card that must be worn and prominently displayed, subject to licence conditions.
For supervisors, employers or managers, a non front-line licence is required. Rather than a card, this will be delivered in letter format, also detailing the responsibilities and tasks of a non front-line licence holder; participation in front-line activities is not permitted by those holding a non front-line licence.
License applications cost £245 for three-year licenses. This is not refundable. For employers purchasing licenses for employees, there should be no tax or National Insurance liability. For employees purchasing for themselves, you can claim tax relief against your taxable income, (eg, the basic rate of tax will merit you £49). Required qualifications for cash and valuables in transit licence:
Before applying for any kind of CVIT licence, you must have one of the following qualifications:
- Level 2 award in cash and valuables in transit
- NOCN award in cash and valuables in transit (Scotland)
You can call the NOCN on the following number – 0114 227 0500
In a first-time application, you must have obtained your qualification no more than three years prior to application. If you are simply looking to renew your licence, a qualification older than three years is very much acceptable, granted that your last licence ran out no more than three years ago. In this instance, it is advisable to renew your qualification before submitting another application.
These qualifications are accepted the same across the entire UK, with very few regional differences, however for workers primarily situated in Scotland, it is advisable to obtain the NOCN award, (see above). Those working in England, N. Ireland and Wales should not seek the NOCN award.
